God is Jumping the Shark
This sort of addresses #3, #2 and my own feelings about the big man upstairs
What is the deal with God? 9/11 (and maybe more accurately, the big George W) seem to have brought God to the front of the stage since the heinous attacks sustained in Manhattan. Nothing can be done without the grace of God, and if/when a feat is accomplished, God is the first one to be thanked without fail. Really? God? I'm not here to attack people's personal beliefs or religious backgrounds, but when dealing with something as real as war, shouldn't our beliefs be a secondary, private consideration? If a soldier wants to pray to God every night and morning, by all means, I am not objecting. If God is part of your life, amen; I am not trying to argue against religion or any particular set of beliefs or morals. But the amount of press that God gets in our post 9/11 world seems exaggerated and overdone rather than spiritual or meaningful.
I think Rees is poking fun of the notion that as long as we say we are doing something "under God" we are doing the right thing. As if you could kill a defenseless puppy and say "under God" and it would justify your murderous actions. America seems to be doing as it pleases with our foreign policy since 9/11 and keeps using the "under God" slogan to make its actions seem humane and rational when in reality they are the opposite.
Also, while I don't know what I would say to Voltron if he came to me at my workplace, I'm pretty sure the following would be included over the course of the convo.
me: voltron...why do bad things happen to good people?
voltron: because you touch yourself at night
